When choosing a dishwasher assistant, customers think, which is better – a 45 or 60 cm dishwasher? This is not about height or depth, but about such a parameter as width – often a technique is assessed by this characteristic.
Much depends on these centimeters: the overall dimensions of the device, its capacity, and build quality. Let’s find out in favor of which dishwasher to give preference.
Selection criteria for a dishwasher
Before buying, first of all, the scale of the “problem” is assessed – where to put the machine and how to connect it. The choice will depend on this.
If the kitchen is of modest size, then every centimeter is sometimes worth its weight in gold – a full-size 60 cm model may not fit into a small kitchenette. The choice is unambiguous – you need to buy a narrow typewriter.
What if there are plenty of places? Which technique is better – 45 cm wide or 60 cm wide? We’ll have to focus on the main selection criteria:
- The number of households and the frequency of receiving guests. This determines the intensity and frequency of the wash. If a lot of dishes are dirty, then the bunker must be roomy and only a full-size model can bear such a load.
- Features of dishes. If you have to wash not only cup-spoons but also pans with baking sheets, spaciousness is important, which a narrow machine does not boast of.
- Economical use. If you are used to saving on electricity and other resources, a small dishwasher may be fine. Why is “maybe”, and not 100%, is appropriate? – you ask. It’s simple: the consumption of water and electricity depends not only on the size of the case but also on the functionality of the dishwasher.
- Ergonomic hopper. This is the way the baskets are arranged inside the wash cabinet. The more thought-out the internal design and the more convenience in adjusting the baskets, the better the washing and the easier the processes of loading and unloading dishes. Hence – saving time and detergents. This parameter is also reflected in spaciousness. Even baking trays can fit in the hopper with adjustable baskets, then in a narrow dishwasher, it will be possible to wash oversized dishes.
- Software arsenal. The more useful options there are, the better. And it’s not a large number of programs, but useful additions such as a delayed start or half load. With these functions, the machine works more economically.
- Noisiness. If the decibels emitted by the equipment exceed the 55 mark, it is better not to take such equipment – it will be noisy in the kitchen. The ideal range is 45 to 52 dB. If you find a model that makes 40-42 dB noise, you will hit the jackpot.
- Brand. The brand plays a role in the choice. German equipment is more in high esteem among the buyer, and the most unloved is domestic. What about the Chinese units? Asian brands compete well even with well-known brands. Therefore, the demand for machinery from the countries of the East is somewhere in the center of the rating.
- Protection against leakage. There are options with partial or full protection. The more reliably you are protected from the flood (and your neighbors too), the calmer you (and your neighbors) are.

Let’s briefly highlight the main advantages and disadvantages of narrow models.
- Compactness and ergonomics. It’s not even about saving free space, but about the optimal placement of the dishwasher in the kitchen, especially a small one. The smaller the machine, the more appropriate it looks in the interior. You can easily integrate the narrow model into a kitchen cabinet, even if you choose a non-built-in option – just install it in a cabinet of a suitable size.
- Large selection and variety of models. We will return to this issue in detail in the main part of the review with examples of models. But in general, the statistics of marketing specialists is such that cars of 45 cm are bought many times more active than usual, and if there is demand, then the market undoubtedly has an offer.
- There are no problems with the selection of the facade. Considering the previous point about the popularity of narrow modifications, it is much easier to choose a furniture facade for a narrow dishwasher. Often, for wide devices, the door is made to order, and these are unnecessary gestures.
- Saving 15 cm of free space in the room.
The pluses are clear, but what about the minuses? There are no fewer of them:
- Not all utensils can be placed in the bunker. Baking tins, large pots, baking trays – it can all just go to the sink for manual washing. And the dishwasher should wash, not you.
- Durability and manufacturability are not something that the owner of such equipment can be proud of. Due to the savings on the case, the parts are located close to each other, which negatively affects their service life. As a result, the machines serve 2 or even 2.5 years less.
- Large families will not be thrilled. If at least 3 more people live with you, it is better to abandon the idea of such an acquisition – the capacity of the camera will not be enough.
Pros and cons of full-size dishwashers
With narrow structures sorted out. In principle, this is already the end of the review. But there are nuances that should be clarified at the expense of standard machines. Their main advantages are as follows:
- Capacious. The standard includes up to 14 sets, there are options with a hopper and 16 sets of dishes.
- Excellent washing quality. It is not related to the software suite or other characteristics. It’s simple: the freer you place the dishes, the better they will wash out.
- Economy modes. Often small dishwashers are deprived of such a useful option as half load. Even if you load half of the bunker into them, the same amount of resources will be spent. The full-fledged models have a variety of programs that save water, energy, and detergents.
There are disadvantages, but they relate exclusively to the size – it is difficult to place the unit in a small kitchen.
Let’s consider the dishwasher device in more detail
The washing class is a rather difficult category to understand, which is determined using test tests – control washing of especially soiled dishes. If the dishes are perfectly clean, the machine is assigned a class A. Class C corresponds to “slight contamination”.
In fact, the vast majority of models on the market are class A or B, while we are far from sure whether the user will be able to distinguish between them in real, not laboratory conditions.
Almost all dishwashers (except for miniature desktop ones) are now equipped with three water sprinklers – lower, middle, and upper. The bottom is usually the largest. The classic design is a rotating “rocker” with holes from which water flows under pressure.
However, there are also more exotic designs. For example, Electrolux in dishwashers of the middle and high price segment uses this version of the lower spray arm.
Summing up: in general, the identity of the design most often ensures the identity of the result: most modern dishwashers wash dishes in about the same way. There is even an opinion (although we do not have objective evidence of its correctness) that now the effectiveness of washing depends more on the correct choice of means than on the dishwasher.
True, the inquisitive minds of engineers constantly come up with something new – well, for example, like the above-mentioned original design of the lower sprinkler.
And, of course, if you are a perfectionist, it is better to have a “rocker” on top, and not a nozzle. At least, for some reason, we only met injectors in budget models.
But it will be much easier to deal with the drying class: class A means perfectly dry dishes, classes B and C correspond to slightly damp dishes. Note that today it will not be so easy to find dishwashers with drying class C or D – they are quite rare. Drying itself can be carried out in two different ways: condensation or using turbo drying.
Cheaper machines usually use the condensation method, in which the dishes are rinsed with hot water, after which the water droplets evaporate, condense on the walls of the chamber, and flow down. This process takes quite a long time. Expensive dishwashers use turbo-drying, which means blowing warm air over the dishes using a special fan. This method will be faster and more efficient.
Not so long ago, a new function has appeared: dishwashers with condensation drying, at the end of the wash, automatically open the door a little so that the drying process becomes faster. This is a logical and correct idea, so all other things being equal, a dishwasher with this function looks preferable.
Cleaning the filters
Every dishwasher has a filter – as a rule, it is located approximately in the middle of the bottom of the washing chamber. From time to time, it must be removed and manually washed to remove grease and food debris. If you have made a cult out of your own laziness or are simply squeamish, it makes sense for you to look for a model with a “self-cleaning” filter – it does not require manual flushing.
But to be honest, our built-in skeptic does not yet very much believe that “self-cleaning” will be as effective as manual cleaning.

If in the case of built-in units, efficiency is determined by dimensions, then with stationary dishwashers, the price often decides everything. Expensive freestanding equipment turned out to be more economical than a cheaper similar narrow machine and a full-size built-in car wash.
This only confirms that the savings are not so much in size as in manufacturability. So by choosing the 45 cm technique, you will only save space and money. It is worth deciding what you are going to save – finances, free space, or resources, and, based on this, make a choice.
