Choosing An Electric Mill For Your Home

Choosing An Electric Mill For Your Home

The household mill is a frequent guest in our kitchens. The most common options for this equipment are an electric coffee grinder and a hand-held spice grinder. However, there is another, a less popular technique for grinding various ingredients, such as a grain mill. Let’s take a closer look at all types of home mills.

Varieties of household mills

The purpose of the mill is to grind solid ingredients into the flour. With the help of such a home appliance, it is easy to grind any cereal for baby food, prepare powdered sugar, chopped nuts. There are both manual and electrical home appliances on sale.

Among the manual equipment options, as mentioned above, the spice mill is most often found. It can be bought together with spices (then it will be disposable) or separately (reusable devices). The electric mill differs from the manual counterpart in its higher productivity. Depending on the target orientation of the devices, there are several of their varieties:

  • coffee grinder;
  • electric mill for spices;
  • flour grinder.

Electric coffee grinders

Probably the most common household appliance in every home. Usually, coffee is ground with it, but often any products available for this are crushed: peppercorns, sugar, and even grain. The device looks like a stationary cylinder 20-25 centimeters high, at the top of which there is a reservoir with mills, tightly closed with a lid.

A coffee grinder can grind absolutely any starting product in the form of grains into flour, but there is one but. The grinding bowl here is small, enough for a few cups of coffee or a small jar of spices, and therefore not suitable for processing large volumes.

Electric Spice Mills

The most common type of home grain grinder is the spice grinder, which is manual and electric. The latter is more popular due to automatic grinding, you do not need to exert much effort, press the button and quickly peppered and salt the cooking dish.

The device looks like a manual tube, at the bottom of which the mills themselves are located together with a reservoir for grains and seeds, and on top of it there is a built-in electric motor. Spice grinders are designed exclusively for spices, you can grind something else, but it is fundamentally pointless.

Home electric flour grinders

Designed exclusively for grinding cereal grains and obtaining homemade flour of selected quality (directly depends on the quality of the grain itself). A powerful device equipped with stone millstones that can handle any grain product of any hardness.

But the main feature of home millers is the ability to process 1 kilogram or more of grain at a time. Or get up to 10 kilograms of flour in half an hour without the risk of critical overheating of the device. Such homemade grain grinders are expensive and are intended for true connoisseurs of the independent process of flour production and the subsequent baking of homemade bread.

Any of these shredders are easy to use and require no special skills.

Disposable mills

These are transparent flasks made of glass or plastic, already filled with one seasoning or a ready-made spice mixture. To salt or pepper a finished dish, just twist the lid over the plate.

Pros. No need to mix spices – the manufacturer has taken care of this. Other advantages are compactness and low price. Advanced models even allow you to adjust the degree of grind.

Minuses. Lack of choice – you may not find the combination of spices you need on the store shelf. In addition, a certain set, as a rule, suits only one type of dish, so instead of one mill, you will have to purchase several. And most importantly: a disposable device will not last long, and buying a new one is an additional cost.

Manual (mechanical) mills

They consist of a flask, a millstone, and a container for ready-made spices. To grind the seasoning, you need to twist the handle or lid.

Pros. Mechanical devices also do not last forever, but they will last much longer than disposable ones. By hand grinding the spices, you can accurately dose the product portions and mix the spices as the recipe or inspiration dictates.

Hand mills are made from a wide variety of materials: wood, ceramics, acrylic, stainless steel, cast iron. The design is also varied so that among the mechanical devices you can find one that will perfectly match the style of your kitchen.

Minuses. These kitchen utensils are not quite versatile – salt crystals do not lend themselves well to hand grinding.

Equipment for grinding grain at home

A household electric grain mill is a small housing with a product supply reservoir, inside of which there is a motor that drives the millstones.

The body can be made of impact-resistant plastic or expensive wood. Millstones can be metal, corundum-ceramic, basalt, corundum or natural granite.

Certain models of flour millers can be additionally equipped with a conditioner, with the help of which you can get cereals from grains at home for making cereals.

Some devices can be equipped with conventional lighting. Almost all devices allow you to adjust the degree of grinding:

  • rude,
  • medium – small,
  • the smallest.

The principle of operation of the grain mill is simple: rotating knives (millstones) grind the grain into flour, which is separated from the chaff through a strainer and poured out through a spout into a substituted container. To suppress noise and prevent slipping, manufacturers equip devices with rubberized housing parts.

Depending on the knife material and design, the electric burr mill can be versatile, suitable for grinding grains, cereals, legumes, nuts, oak bark, herbs, and many other hard products. This appliance is also suitable for coffee. There are also specialized flour milling machines designed exclusively for the preparation of flour from non-butter grains.

How to choose a grain mill

How to choose a grain mill

To buy the unit you need, you need to focus on your needs. A universal grinder is suitable for grinding various solid products. If the quality of the resulting flour is important, then it is better to choose a flour-grinding model.

Also, when choosing, you should pay attention to the power of the motor, since the performance of the device depends on it. The ability to grind the hardest grains such as corn, peas, and other legumes is feasible for mills with a power of 360 watts or more. An important aspect of the choice can be called the material from which the mill housing is made.

For example, a body made of natural wood is considered environmentally friendly, and besides, the wood imparts a pleasant aroma to flour.

Such a device with a body made of high-quality wood of beech, linden, pine, or other species with millstones made of natural stone is almost eternal. This is a good investment in a healthy diet for household members and their offspring.

Choosing an electric spice mill

It has been known since ancient times that freshly ground spices give a dish an incredible aroma and taste. Pepper, coriander, cloves, and other spices can be ground at home using modern devices: the industry produces special household hand and electric grinders.

Electric models can be powered by mains, rechargeable battery or conventional replaceable batteries. Battery-powered or rechargeable spice mills are appropriate not only in the home kitchen: they can be used in suburban and field conditions.

Choosing an electric spice mill

Making spicy seasoning with an electrical appliance does not require effort, unlike using a manual analog.

Salt and pepper mills are usually small in size. The device is a housing, usually in the form of a flask, inside which there is a motor, millstones, and a container for collecting the crushed spicy product.

Ease of use of an electrical appliance and a quite affordable price for many housewives have become the determining factors for the purchase of such an assistant because ground spices from store bags are significantly inferior to fresh grinding in terms of aroma and taste.

When choosing a device, you should pay attention to the materials of the case. According to user reviews, the best option for grinding seasonings is a stainless steel mill. The material is durable, odor-neutral, and gives the product a presentable look. The millstones are an important element in the device.

For grinding spices, knives made of high-strength plastic, stainless steel, and ceramics are used. Plastic knives can be found in budget models. They are short-lived – the service life is about 5 years. Therefore, it is preferable from the point of view of operation to choose a device with stainless steel or ceramic knives. But the price of such devices will be higher.
